Ceylon Tea Museum

The Ceylon Tea museum situated in Hantane, kandy is a brilliant museum in the central province of Sri lanka. The four storied museum was established in 1925 at an old looking tea factory. Firstly, Hantane area was used for Coffee enterprise, but with the failure of the industry they moved into tea plantations. Tourists can easily reach the destination within 5 kilo meters from Kandy city. The route to the Ceylon tea museum is located thorough lush tea plantations.

As soon as you enter the museum you will be giving a warm welcome and arrange a full guided tour within the museum. The ground floor and the second floor exhibit the machinery.

Yet most of the machinery are belonged to the colonial, it is difficult to believe the heavy machinery still works. A library with an auditorium comprised with audio and visual facilities are arranged in the first floor. The third floor is detached for tea sales outlets. Therefore if you visit this well worth museum you can grab lots of information regarding the whole tea making process. The cat walk platform which was used by the superintendent and the tea maker of the former tea factory is still accessible. Fourth floor or the top floor is consigned as a restaurant where visitors can enjoy a free cup of tea. Hence you can look into a panoramic view of the Knuckle’s mountain range, Matale range of hiils and Hunnasgiriya site. At a glance of the view is breathtaking. So make sure to bring a binocular with you. The tea shop also sells good quality tea for the visitors.

The tea museum of Hantane was abandoned approximately for a decade yet the Sri Lanka Tea board and the Planter’s association of Sri lanka initiated to reestablish the museum. During the colonial times, they had set apart a special consideration for the tea plantations in Kandy. They were successful with the first tea cultivations. So on the tea plantations were diffused in the country and even today the industry of the tea plantations are playing a key role in Sri lankan economy.

This museum has been a rated tourist attraction among the attractions because it has exaggerated the tea making process and the successful story behind the Ceylon tea industry. Moreover you can visit the ‘Peradeniya Botanical garden’ and ‘Loolecondera estate’ to entertain the lush green plantations and greenish surrounding.
