One of the Sri Lankan heritages, Dhadagamuwa Rajamaha viharaya is an ancient dagoba located in Dadagamuwa, Gampaha. Many devotees and pilgrims come to worship Lord Buddha to this temple. In addition, many travelers who are penchant about the combination between Sri Lankan culture and religion concern the temple very much. First, you have to get down from Kalagedihena junction after taking the Colombo-Kandy route. Thereby take Veyangoda road and turn left after passing about 12km. finally, you have to go along this road about 1 km until you reach the temple.
It is evident as soon as you enter the ‘Vatadageya’ that the temple is carrying a characteristically Sri Lankan architecture. Historians believe that the paintings and the frescoes belong to the kandyan era. Another curious feature of the temple is the roof, divided into 2 decks subsided to four ways. And also it has a pinnacle amidst of the Kandy. The roof of Viharageya is embellished with 2 rows of paintings. Intermittently the upper row paintings show the Simbula jatakaya and Themiya jathka story; the lower row paintings elaborate the Dhamsoda jathaka story. The ancient Dhadagamuwa raja maha viharaya is a symbol of Sri Lankan architecture. Thus the constructed Buddha statues recall about Serenity in Buddhism. The sacred bodhi tree planted in the temple complex is believed a sapling of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura. The paintings had to be recovered during the19th and 20th century. There are 2 incomplete wall paintings on the back wall of the Watadageya. The dagoba has taken the shape of ‘Bublakara’ (water bulb). The spire is a crystal pinnacle ringed with 10 spirals. The corridor around the dagoba is covered with circular stone columns. ‘Nidan gala’ and ‘Padalassa gala’ witnesses that Dhadagamuwa raja maha viharaya beholds to a great history.
Currently, the dhadagamuwa Raja maha viharaya is co-coordinating a Dhamma school named Sri Dharmapala jayanthi Dhamma School at the temple. The school teaches how to convert your life style to a better mental and spiritual manner through Dhamma teachings. Many school children are learnt under the guidance of Ven karadetiyana Gunanada thero in the school. Moreover, they have arranged several programs to expand the Buddhism. In poya days the temple gets crowded with many pilgrims as well as other temples in Gampaha district. On behalf of that, it is worshiped and traveled by many local and foreign travelers counting its beauty and specialty.
