The solid looking ancient rock fortress complex of Yapahuwa lying on the north western province of Sri lanka is truly an amusement. The fortress lies on a gigantic 90 meter high rock stands on the lowlands. The great king Buvanekabahu constructed the fortress on a huge granite rock in 1272.
Since the Polonnaruwa kingdom was transferred to Yapahuwa in 1272 due to the South Indian invasions, the sacred tooth relic had to be secured. Yapahuwa was a strong rock fortress and a palace to the king. Soon after the death of King Buvanekabahu in 1284, Pandiyans of South India invaded Sri Lanka again. As a result of that they captured the sacred tooth relic and raised a devastating reign in Sri Lanka.
