The Lankatilake Viharaya of Polonnaruwa is a monastic complex located at a serene atmospheric surrounding which was built by the great King Parakramabahu. It has recently been visited by many tourists regarding its value of culture tourism. The inner walls of the survived ramparts and walls are adorned with faded murals and outside walls are divided into five floors. The 14 m high Buddha statue amidst the structure is still survived. Additionally, they are depicting traditional Sinhalese architectural patterns and styles. The two great walls of 4m thickness and 17m high narrow aisle are the most curious feature of the Lankatilake Viharaya.
Polonnaruwa is the Eastern corner of the Cultural triangle of Sri Lanka. Rather than that, it is the 2nd capital of ancient Sri Lanka. Additionally, Lankatilake is a colossal Buddha shrine and a work of art and architecture of Sinhalese. It should be pointed out that the South Indian Dravidian invasions have enriched and have added multiple features to the Sri Lankan architecture. Unfortunately, you will find the headless Buddha statue of the Viharaya due to the natural disasters and treasure hunters. Further, they have become faded and neglected from conservations. The entrance is guarded by two guard stones so called as ‘Mura gal’. Not only is that but also Makara Torana (dragon arches) / balustrades decorated with Dragon statues and lions proved to be fascinating. At ancient times the Lankatilake temple was concerned as the image house of Alahana Parivena. Still, the grandeur site is being excavated and preserved by the Department of Archeology. This Gedige shrine type mansion is believed to be an originally five storied complex.
Polonnaruwa is a UNESCO world heritage site with several cultural and religious attractions. Yet Polonnaruwa kingdom was appointed as a Royal capital, King Parakramabahu added several infrastructural and architectural features to the city. Moreover, places like Lankatilake Viharaya has witnessed that the city was significant from a religious point of view plus Buddhism and Hinduism culture. Travelers are indulged in exploring and being knowledgeable about the place. The contemplative surrounding around the Viharaya is a great opportunity for you to relax and refresh your mind. Obviously, the authorities have made it easier to be traveled and explored. But just leave the foot prints without anything.
