Polonnaruwa is famous for several ornamental places. One such place is the Nelum Pokuna of Polonnaruwa of North central province which was concerned as a part of the Jetavana Monastery complex. Tourists who are eager to explore ancient Sri Lankan history and exclusivity of our architecture and style are preferred most to see the Pond. The Nelum Pokuna or the Lotus bath located towards the North of Polonnaruwa has a shape of a Lotus flower. Thus there are seven ponds together with the Main pond at the place. This Lotus pond located Close to the Parakramabahu’s palace is believed to be constructed by King Nissankamalla.

The fine cut granite is the most curious feature of the entire pond. At king’s time, the entire area was surrounded by lush gardens and flowers. Hence you can easily imagine how it could be fascinating in past. Obviously the lotus flower of granite in full bloom 24 feet 9 in. diameter, with five concentric laminae of eight petals. Many of the tourists travel around the city and miss some hot spots around Polonnaruwa. Additionally, the Nelum Pokuna is yet another place like that. Polonnaruwa was a rich Kingdom of religious, economic, financial and architectural fields. However, it was influenced with South Indian Dravidian invasions too. It is a must to say that these kinds of invasions brought us both good and bad effects. The anyhow Sri Lankan architecture was developed with Dravidian architectural patterns and styles gradually. Usually, monks and kings used Ponds to bath and sanitation services. There were special ponds arranged and separated from ordinary society for Royal parties and religious monks. You will find a number of Ponds related to the legends around the site.
Almost all of them are built on granite. The skillful architect has been capable enough to make it smooth and attractive by adding and carving it with Sinhala patterns and styles. Balustrades, Punkalas and also beautifully carved and proudly standing lion statues are additional consists of the Pond.
