
The ancient city of Polonnaruwa in North Central province of Sri Lanka is famous for ruined but prestigious monuments which date back to the 12th era. Therefore tourists recognize this city as a significant cultural site in Sri Lankan tourism. The ‘Sath Mahal prasada’ which was built by the King Parakramabahu the great, is a pyramid shaped rare stupa. It was built in the 12th century and believed to be a Thai Buddhist temple.
Anyhow some argue that this structure is quite similar to the stupas of Siam and Cambodia. The stupa was built as a tribute to the Cambodia and an as a sacred place to be worshiped by the Cambodian soldiers who worked for the King in ancient Sri Lanka. In past, this was a seven storied mansion. In order to reach the upper levels, you can take the stair cases. The original creator of the mansion is still unknown as well as the original name. There are four entrances to the Sath mahal prasada and has a height of 9 meters and is over 30 feet (9 meters) in height. The Sat mahal parasada is a rare structure of Sinhalese which is survived today.
As a result of being open to the harsh sun and atmosphere, the building is now faded. But still it is not difficult or harsh to explore the significance and that it was a mansion of 7 stories. Locals appreciate this structure very much due to the rare chance that they might receive from the authorities to see such monument. The place was found by eh department of Archeology and handed over to the nation within several months from finding. Further, you can easily take tours for Medirigiriya, Somawathie, Dimbulagala and Buduruwayaya are not far away from Polonnaruwa. So they also can be reached without any difficulty.
Polonnaruwa had to face several invasions of the South Indian Dravidians, but these invasions caused to develop the culture and enrich our traditions. Thus with the development of irrigation systems and other agricultural based infrastructure and facilities, Polonnarwuwa was gradually turned to a royal capital city. Anyway, the great Kings who ruled Polonnaruwa never forget to build religious monuments and cultural building for the dignity. He Sathmahal prasada in Polonnaruwa is one such monument that we should respect and protect for the future generation.
