Ussangoda is a yet another place of Sri Lankan tourism comprised with valuable geographical features. Ussangama is located on the Colombo-Kataragama road near Ambalantota-Nonagama junction in Hambanthota district. It is under control by the department of archeology. Ussangoda differs from other destinations of Sri Lanka because of the exclusive soil structure and flora.
There are several beliefs regarding the of the unique reddish color of the soil. One of them is that a part of a meteor hit the ground. The layers of the soil structure have some residuals similar to a meteoroid hit. Other than that the soil structure is complemented with a high concentration of minerals and metals. It is bordered with coastal shore and a jungle. The coastal area is a perfect place to observe this soil structure. It is evident that the Ussangoda earth is rich in minerals like Nickel. Some ingredients of the soil could attract magnets. Due to the Martian look in the ground, it seems like we are on the Mars planet. But further scientific examinations should be carried out in this area. The history of Ussangda area dates back to Rama-Rawana era. Peasantries believe that Ussangoda is the place where King Rawana’s air port was constructed and his big peacock shaped air craft landed. Another brief is that Ussangoda is the resting place of Demi god- ‘Mangara’. You can observe several kinds of beautiful fish in the Ussangoda Sea. Ussangoda landscape is beautified with pigmy forests, short grass, and moss. A summit of hard red earth covers an area about 1 square km. Another curious feature is that the Ussangaoda was a dwelling site of the ancient prehistoric human in Sri Lanka. Simultaneously Ussangoda is close to the ‘miniha gal kanda’ pre historic dwelling site (an archeological site) in Yala national park.
Obviously, you can’t see any taller trees yet little circular vegetations of grass or moss. Ussangoda facilitates a few kinds of wild animals and birds. You can follow the route to the sea coast. Eventually, it will carry you to a rock cliff with a panoramic view of the Indian ocean. It is wonderful. Certainly, this is a Martian land. By the way, Ussangoda beach which expands to Godawaya is a nesting ground for leatherback sea turtles. Areas like Lunama and Kalametiya are proffered to the tourists to be visited. So that tourists can entertain another rich bio diversity type in Sri Lanka.
